Tucked away in the rolling hills of Magaliesburg, La Provence D’Afrique is more than just a guesthouse—it’s a place with soul, history, and artistic roots. What many guests don’t know is that this French-style retreat began as the private stone studio of acclaimed South African sculptor Charles Gotthard.
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and discover how a creative space became one of South Africa’s most charming escapes.
Charles Gotthard wasn’t just a craftsman—he was a visionary. Known for his breathtaking architectural sculptures and stonework, he built his private studio right here, nestled beside the Magaliesburg River. Surrounded by trees, natural stone, and open skies, it was a space where inspiration flowed.
Rather than remove this history, the transformation into a guesthouse embraced it. Today, you can still see his artistic fingerprints throughout the property—in the graceful archways, the rustic textures, the curated murals, and even some of his original pieces that remain proudly on display.
The idea to turn the old stone studio into a French-themed retreat was born from a love for the romantic charm of rural Provence, France. Inspired by the quiet cafés, flower-filled courtyards, and timeless elegance of French villages, the space was carefully redesigned into a whimsical escape—without losing the essence of the original studio.
Seven uniquely designed French suites were built around the concept of an authentic French village street. Cast-iron chairs, cobblestone walkways, fountains, and fireplaces bring the theme to life—creating the feeling that you’ve been transported to the south of France, right here in South Africa.
From the handpicked antique furniture to the attention to detail in every room, La Provence D’Afrique continues to honour the creative spirit that started it all. It’s a place where past and present meet—where the beauty of art blends with the warmth of hospitality.
So when you sip your coffee in the courtyard, relax in your clawfoot tub, or explore the tranquil gardens, remember—you’re not just visiting a destination. You’re stepping into a story.
